The scope should focus on public policy in Canada or another jurisdiction and involve research
from a variety of sources including policy research organizations, government documents and
scholarly sources (journal articles, books, online scholarly publications) etc.
Your policy brief should be no longer than 5 single-typed pages including tables, charts, figures
and references. You can use headings, subheadings, textboxes, columns, graphics, charts,
visuals, images etc. within the page limitations above.
The format of the policy brief is flexible but should include the following: some background
evidence on the topic, a brief policy history; outline the core of the policy debate and important
dimensions related to why the policy topic is controversial; summarize the pros and cons
related to the controversial aspects of the policy debate; identify existing laws, policies and
instruments related to the topic; clearly identify and analyse key policy stakeholders;
incorporate analysis using theories, frameworks and concepts from lectures and required
readings; and a conclusion that includes your overall analysis and recommendations related to
the policy topic and analysis of future policy directions or consequences of the status quo.
