Begin by reading over the attached instructions for the essay assignment. As you can see, this is a more complex essay assignment than the previous ones; there are many steps involved in the process and a number of tasks to complete before you get to the point where you can begin drafting the essay. The remaining lessons, activities, and assignments in this Unit are designed to prepare you for that step.
A few key things to note:
1. Many of you love to Google and think all the world’s information is available to you instantaneously that way. It is not. You may not complete this essay by relying exclusively on open internet sources. You are required to use the Online Databases accessible through the Dallas College library to conduct research (
2. You are required to have at least five sources for this research project, and these are to be of diverse types. To help you achieve this, you are required to have a minimum of two newspaper articles and one scholarly journal article among your sources. Use the databases to locate these.
3. Beyond the minimum, you are free to use other types of sources that you might locate elsewhere, but with some caveats: you may not use Wikipedia or any type of encyclopedia, and you may not use or any similar aggregator website. You must also fully and carefully evaluate all external sources to ensure that they are credible.
4. Your essay must include the following elements: a clear thesis statement, a counterargument (which takes a position different from your own), and a refutation (which is a rebuttal of the counterargument). This is discussed in more detail in the essay instruction document. You will also get practice with each of these elements in Lessons later in this Unit.
