CONDUCTING YOUR INVESTIGATIVE STUDY
You will be conducting your study INDIVIDUALLY.
Collect data on 4 participants Keep a record of all your field notes/observations, and for each participant, include you personal thoughts, challenges and observations. Do not audio or video record your interview or observations, as our ethics approval for this assessment does not allow for such recording. Doing so would breach the Code of Ethical Conduct for Psychologists. Note, that you do not have to collect data ’in-person’, if it it is not COVID- safe to do so. You may instead collect data via the phone, face-time, Skype, Zoom or similar.
POINTS TO CONSIDER BEFORE COLLECTING DATA:
Work and plan you study in advance, listing what you may require to carry out your study. For example, make copies of the consent formats and data collection sheets as per your chosen study.
Make observations as per your study/data collection sheet. Make your field notes whilst you conduct your interviews/analyse storybooks. These field notes and other documents, like the consent forms, MUST be included in your Appendices. Make a note of your learning and challenges as this will assist you to answer your reflection questions.
WRITING/REPORTING YOUR STUDY
There are two ways in which you can write up your Investigative Study:
Experimental report format Question and Answer format Either format is acceptable as long as you have focused on and answered the 5 main questions related to your study; your report has an introduction including appropriate theory; you have used your data to discuss study outcomes; your discussion is related to the topic and supported with each research outcomes and relevant theory; included a valid conclusion; included your reflection questions; referenced appropriately.
A suggested format is Question and Answer format, as follows: – General introduction to your study (one paragraph only, defining the parameters, constructs or issue under investigation) – Detailed Introduction (including theoretical, empirical, literature review)
– Question 1 (incorporating your data in relevant APA formatted Tables and Figures
– Question 2 and 3 become a discussion section
– Question 4 Conclusion
-Question 5 Reflection questions
-Reference List (this should inclue 9 journal articles, including the core article) -Appendices Your investigative study appendices should be at the end of your document and must contain: your field notes, that is, observations; any questions that come to your mind whilst interviewing or observing; your thoughts/reactions; consent forms and records of initial observation or interview. Submitting the tables provided in the assessment protocol is not sufficient content for your appendices. You must submit typed or hand written field notes that demonstrate your process as a researcher. This document will be submitted to Turnitin with your completed investigative study. All data collection sheets, field notes, consent forms must included in the Appendices. This is an APA formatting requirement. Please do not include tables or graphs in your Appendices that should appear in the body of your report, as support for your argument. This will cause unnecessary loss of marks (see Marking Criteria). USE THE MARKING CRITERIA AS A GUIDE FOR THE THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL DEPTH REQUIRED TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS. Complete the checklist found at the end of the investigative study instructions (see Assessments folder) before submitting your work to ensure all required components are included. If a component is missing from your submitted paper, you will not receive marks for it.
